After more than 2 years and a long string of events that concluded with half finished studio recordings and incomplete projects, Not From Georgia is once again recording. With an ambitious goal of 3 full length collections by years’ end. All current songs and previously unreleased material will be re-recorded with new arrangements and feature full instrumentation. The decision has been made to go with full Creative Commons licensing for all Not From Georgia music which means it will be free to you! Be on the look out soon for a pre-release here on the website. Not From Georgia songs featured in independent Film “ICH HALT DICH FEST (I’ll Hold You Tightly)”

“ICH HALT DICH FEST (I’ll Hold You Tightly)” a German independent film from N-TEN Film’s Julia Sophie Schabus, Til Schindler, and Melanie Wälde features several Not From Georgia titles in the soundtrack. N-TEN film is a group of young individuals who jointly produced films that identify with youth-related issues in today’s society and culture. The majority are students of the Babelsberg film school, and thus constantly in contact with film. The recently released film has been screened at “JuFinale 2010″ and “Flicker & Noise 2010″ where it was awarded a Jury Prize.

“Not From Georgia songs were chosen for “ICH HALT DICH FEST (I’ll Hold You Tightly)” because the music is the soul of a film and these songs were inspirational— it seemed as if the lyrics were written just for us. We used ‘Highway 84′, ‘Mine’, and ‘Take A Little Time,’” explained N-TEN Film team member Melanie Wälde.

These songs were recorded live by Gary Underwood at The Ragged Edge Coffehouse in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in the fall of 2003. Titles include Confidence Song, Mine, Take a Little Time, and Highway 84 all hammered out on my trusty Gibson on stage at the Ragged Edge in front of the ol’ Gettysburg crowd. Special thanks to all those who attended. The CD has been released as a FREE full digital download at Jamendo, including artwork, under Creative Commons licensing. Enjoy!

Songcast #3: Old Friend

Sparked by an upcoming visit from Tom, Old Friend (2007) was written just for the occasion when I was living in La Crescenta. However the song is for Jeremy as well and anyone else I have not seen in years, afterall, we have all shared “stories in the Burg.” (Gettysburg, Williamsburg, Chambersburg, Some-other-burg etc) The song was played out once or twice in Los Angeles at Whipserz Lounge and then shuffled away into the bottomless song binder. I am still utilizing a whole step down on my guitar tuning due to the fact I am finding it easier to sing.

Songcast #2: Freedom

I have decided to dive into the past for awhile. Freedom (1993) is the first and only ‘politically’ motivated song I have ever written. I am unsure as to what inspired me to write it, however, I do recall being partly motivated by an “expired parking meter violation” that I found on the windshield of my tan 4-door 1979 VW Rabbit. Over the years Freedom has been underplayed even though sometimes requested. Since I have been experimenting with alternate tunings, playing a whole step down seem to work well here. I kept the same arrangement but the pre-chorus and the chorus are sung a bit differently. Enjoy!

Songcast #1: Clear Mind

Clear Mind is a song written some years ago (sometime around 1993) but was rarely, if ever, played. I did make a recording of it once with a hand held tape recorder on White’s Island in Wiscasset, Maine. (For those who know about White’s Island, I probably do not have to tell you what I was doing out there…however…for those who do not, well, let’s just say at that time it was a place for youth to participate in “recreational activites”…) It was a terrible recording and an unfinished song. In the spirit of trying something new, I rewrote the music in open “D” and changed the original arrangement. I have to thank Elias James who helped me record and encouraged me take after take of bad vocals–Thanks Elias.

The full-length CD that never was…a three-song studio demo with full band instrumentation. These songs were completed while living in LA with the help of Dan Marfisi and Jones House Music Production. Includes Cry on my Shoulder, Lonely for TV, and Mine. All songs have been re-mastered to commercial release quality. Although this physical CD is not available for purchase, it is has been released under Creative Commons as a FREE digital album download including artwork at Jamendo. Enjoy! NOTE: UPDATE–One song was accidentally duplicated by the server–if you already downloaded the album, you can download this file and replace as the last song “Mine”.

Just finished revamping the neglected Not From Georgia Myspace Music page, while cleaning up the Myspace CSS code with a little help from google. I have added links to all the NFG-related pages that I am aware of floating out there in cyberspace in a new sidebar section at the bottom right titled “On the Net”. If you find others please send the links in so I can add them. Most links, CD Baby, Bitmunk, Passalong, Tradebit, Payplay.fm are where you can pay for songs and download digitally or buy a physical CD.
